How to Get Rid of Negative Thoughts: A Practical Guide to Improving Your Mindset and Mental Wellbeing

Overcoming negative thoughts and improving mental wellbeing through self-awareness and balanced thinking

How to Get Rid of Negative Thoughts: A Practical Guide to Improving Your Mindset and Mental Wellbeing

Negative thoughts are a normal part of human experience. They may appear because of daily stress, anxiety, difficult experiences, uncertainty, or fear about the future. However, when negative thinking becomes frequent and overwhelming, it can affect mood, self-confidence, relationships, concentration, and the ability to enjoy everyday life.

Getting rid of negative thoughts does not mean forcing yourself to think positively all the time. Instead, it means learning how to notice your thoughts, understand them, question them, and respond to them in a healthier and more balanced way.

What Are Negative Thoughts?

Negative thoughts are patterns of thinking that may cause a person to focus excessively on problems, mistakes, threats, or possible negative outcomes.

Examples include:

  • “I always fail.”

  • “Nothing will ever change.”

  • “Everyone is better than me.”

  • “What if something terrible happens?”

  • “Everything is my fault.”

  • “I cannot handle this problem.”

Having an occasional negative thought does not necessarily indicate a mental health problem. What matters is how frequently these thoughts occur and how strongly they affect emotions, behavior, and everyday life.

Why Is It Difficult to Stop Negative Thinking?

When a negative thought is repeated frequently, it can become an automatic mental pattern.

A person may experience a situation, interpret it negatively, feel anxious or sad, avoid certain situations, and then think about the original situation even more. This can strengthen the original negative belief.

For this reason, the goal is not always to stop thinking, but to change the way we respond to our thoughts.

What Is the Connection Between Negative Thoughts and Anxiety?

Repeated thoughts about the future can contribute to anxiety.

For example, constantly thinking:

“What if I fail?”

may develop into a long series of negative possibilities that create fear before anything has actually happened.

Learn more about anxiety symptoms and ways to manage them.

How Can You Get Rid of Negative Thoughts?

1. Notice the Thought Instead of Automatically Believing It

When a negative thought appears, try to recognize it as a thought rather than an established fact.

Instead of:

“I am a failure.”

Try:

“I feel like I failed at this situation, but that does not mean I am a failure.”

This creates psychological distance between you and the thought.

2. Ask Yourself Whether the Thought Is Realistic

Not every thought represents reality.

Ask yourself:

  • What evidence supports this thought?

  • What evidence contradicts it?

  • Is there another explanation?

  • Am I expecting the worst possible outcome?

  • What would I say to a friend experiencing the same situation?

These questions can help you develop a more balanced interpretation.

3. Watch for Overgeneralization

Common negative thinking patterns often include words such as “always,” “never,” and “everything.”

For example:

“I always make mistakes.”

could become:

“I made a mistake in this situation, and I can learn from it.”

The second statement focuses on a specific event rather than defining your entire identity.

4. Do Not Try to Force Every Thought Away

Trying to eliminate a thought by force can sometimes make you focus on it even more.

Instead, acknowledge the thought and gently redirect your attention toward the activity or situation in front of you.

Slow breathing, focusing on your surroundings, or engaging in a practical activity may help you return your attention to the present.

5. Focus on What You Can Control

Constantly thinking about things you cannot change can increase feelings of helplessness.

Try separating situations into two categories:

What I can control: my choices, behavior, responses, and the actions I can take.

What I cannot control: other people's opinions, the past, and every possible future outcome.

This distinction helps direct your energy toward things you can actually influence.

What Is Overthinking?

Overthinking involves repeatedly analyzing situations, conversations, mistakes, or possible future events without reaching a useful solution.

A person may replay the same conversation repeatedly or imagine many negative scenarios that have not happened.

When overthinking becomes frequent, it can affect sleep, concentration, mood, and daily functioning.

Setting aside a limited amount of time to consider a problem and then deliberately moving to another activity may help interrupt the cycle.

Does Positive Thinking Solve Everything?

Positive thinking alone does not solve every problem.

It is usually more helpful to develop realistic and balanced thinking rather than forcing yourself to ignore difficult emotions.

Instead of:

“Everything will definitely be perfect.”

try:

“There may be challenges, but I can deal with them one step at a time.”

This approach is more realistic and can support healthier coping.

How Do Daily Habits Affect Negative Thinking?

Daily habits can influence emotional wellbeing.

Helpful habits may include:

  • Maintaining regular sleep.

  • Engaging in appropriate physical activity.

  • Eating a balanced diet.

  • Avoiding excessive caffeine and stimulants.

  • Taking breaks from digital stress.

  • Maintaining supportive social connections.

  • Making time for enjoyable activities.

These habits do not replace professional treatment when it is needed, but they can support mental wellbeing and stress management.

The Importance of Self-Awareness

Self-awareness helps people recognize connections between situations, thoughts, emotions, and behavior.

You can keep a simple record when you notice a recurring negative thought:

Situation: What happened?

Thought: What did I tell myself?

Emotion: What did I feel?

Response: How did I react?

Alternative thought: Is there a more balanced way to understand the situation?

This process can help identify recurring patterns of negative thinking.

When Do Negative Thoughts Require Professional Support?

Psychological counseling may be helpful when negative thoughts become persistent or significantly interfere with everyday life.

Signs that deserve attention include:

  • Persistent sadness or anxiety.

  • Difficulty sleeping because of excessive thinking.

  • Loss of interest in normal activities.

  • Significant loss of self-confidence.

  • Social withdrawal.

  • Difficulty concentrating.

  • Constantly expecting the worst.

  • Negative thoughts affecting work, education, or relationships.

If you experience thoughts about self-harm or not wanting to live, seek urgent professional help rather than trying to manage the situation alone.

How Can Psychological Therapy Help?

Psychological approaches, including Cognitive Behavioral Therapy (CBT), can help people identify unhelpful thinking patterns, evaluate them, and develop healthier and more balanced ways of responding.

Therapy is not about forcing someone to be positive all the time. It is about helping people understand their thoughts and emotions and respond to them in more realistic and constructive ways.

Final Thoughts

Getting rid of negative thoughts does not mean stopping all negative thinking or ignoring difficult emotions. The goal is to learn how to notice thoughts, evaluate whether they are realistic, avoid unhealthy generalizations, focus on what you can control, and develop more balanced responses.

Healthy daily habits, supportive relationships, and professional psychological counseling can all contribute to better emotional wellbeing when negative thinking or anxiety becomes difficult to manage.

What is the Difference Between a Psychologist and a Psychiatrist? And When Should I See a Psychologist?

Many people go through problems, crises, and sometimes mental illnesses, and they get confused when thinking about seeking psychological treatment. Should they go to a psychiatrist or a psychologist? Both are trained in dealing with the mind and providing psychological care to patients, but each differs in the approach to treatment and the types of psychological problems they specialize in treating

Read More Read less

Here we will explain the main similarities and differences between a psychiatrist and a psychologist and answer this question. First: The Main Differences Between a Psychiatrist and a Psychologist 1. Type of Education The nature of education differs between a psychiatrist and a psychologist, but both require obtaining a masters degree. Psychiatrists studied medicine for 7 years then specialized in psychiatry and received training for at least four years in hospitals and rehabilitation centers on diagnosis and approved therapeutic methods. As for psychologists, they studied in the Faculty of Education or the Faculty of Arts in the Department of Psychology for 4 years, then received practical training in psychiatric hospitals for at least one year to obtain a professional license. 2. Psychological Problems Each Specializes In Treating Psychiatrists specialize in critical mental conditions and mental illnesses such as schizophrenia, depression, obsessive-compulsive disorder, attention deficit disorder, and other mental illnesses that require treatment. Whereas psychologists specialize in moderate or mild cases such as behavioral modification, sleep disorders, tension in emotional relationships, and other behavioral problems. 3. Prescribing Medication Prescribing medication is the responsibility of psychiatrists alone because they work on both the psychological and biological levels at the same time, understanding the bodys nature and genetic history. They studied anatomy and the bodys response to medications in medical school in addition to their knowledge of the side effects of drugs. Whereas psychologists are not allowed to prescribe or administer medication because they do not have sufficient knowledge of its biological effects and side effects. 4. Diagnosis and Treatment Methods Psychiatrists provide comprehensive care for the patient as they focus on family and social support for the patient and their upbringing since childhood. They may also request some types of tests and psychological measures to help with diagnosis. In cases where the patient suffers from an organic problem causing the psychological problem, the psychiatrist may resort to drug intervention alongside psychological and behavioral therapy. Whereas psychologists rely on understanding the patients upbringing and its effect on their behavior. They offer some psychological tests and measures to help diagnose cases and rely on modifying the patients misconceptions and improving their mental state away from medication and medical examinations. 5. Practice The ideal form of providing psychological service and care is that the first line is the psychiatrist, as they study the case and determine whether it is mild, moderate, or critical, then refer it to a psychologist. If the cases are mild or moderate, they only require psychological treatment without drug intervention. There are some critical cases where after the psychiatrist finishes the drug treatment, they may refer the cases to the psychologist to continue with psychological rehabilitation. Second: What are the Similarities Between a Psychiatrist and a Psychologist? After presenting the main differences between a psychiatrist and a psychologist, we will present the similarities between them: 1. Both are trained to understand the nature of the mind, thinking, and behaviors. 2. Both have the ability to provide counseling and psychological support. 3. Both improve and develop the patients thinking and behaviors. Should I See a Psychiatrist or a Psychologist? After presenting the main differences and similarities between a psychiatrist and a psychologist, we will answer the question most patients ask about which type of therapist to seek help from: ● You should see a psychiatrist if: 1. The condition is critical or when suffering from certain mental illnesses such as depression, schizophrenia, or obsessive-compulsive disorder, and other illnesses that require a specialist to request the necessary tests and scans and prescribe the appropriate medication. 2. The medical condition has persisted for a long time or has recurred after treatment. 3. Psychological rehabilitation alone is not effective, and medication intervention is needed. 4. You are considering harming yourself or suicide. 5. Your treating doctor recommends seeing a specialist psychiatrist. ● You will need to see a psychologist if: 1. You are experiencing anxiety, depression, psychological pressures, or other difficulties affecting mental health. 2. You feel that life is difficult and need psychological support to cope with it. 3. You need to assess your mental health if you feel it is not okay. 4. You are experiencing many marital problems and need help dealing with them. 5. Your child is experiencing behavioral and coping problems and needs behavior modification. 6. You have experienced an emotional shock or a painful loss and need support to overcome it in a healthy way.
