Narcissism: Traits, Signs, and How to Deal With Narcissistic Behavior
Narcissism has become a widely used term when discussing difficult relationships. People may quickly describe a partner, spouse, family member, or colleague as a “narcissist” when they behave selfishly, seek attention, or try to control situations.
However, there is an important psychological difference between having narcissistic traits and having Narcissistic Personality Disorder (NPD).
Not everyone who seeks attention, behaves selfishly, or struggles with criticism has a personality disorder. A professional diagnosis requires careful assessment of long-term patterns, their severity, and how they affect relationships and everyday functioning.
What Is Narcissism?
Narcissism generally refers to traits that may involve excessive self-focus, a strong need for admiration, an exaggerated sense of importance, and difficulty recognizing or responding to other people's emotional needs.
Some narcissistic traits can exist to varying degrees without indicating a mental health disorder.
Narcissistic Personality Disorder, however, is a recognized personality disorder with specific diagnostic criteria and should not be diagnosed through social media content, online quizzes, or observation of one behavior.
Excessive focus on success, status, or personal image.
Difficulty accepting criticism.
Minimizing other people's achievements.
Using relationships primarily for personal benefit.
Difficulty considering other people's feelings or needs.
Strong sensitivity to rejection or failure.
Frequent comparison with others.
Having one or several of these characteristics does not automatically mean that someone has Narcissistic Personality Disorder.
Narcissism vs. Healthy Self-Confidence
Healthy self-confidence and narcissism are not the same.
A confident person can usually recognize their strengths while respecting the abilities and achievements of others. They can also acknowledge mistakes and respond to reasonable criticism.
Narcissistic patterns, on the other hand, may involve a persistent need to demonstrate superiority or reduce another person's value to protect a particular self-image.
Healthy confidence does not require making other people feel inferior.
Is Every Selfish Person a Narcissist?
No.
Almost anyone can behave selfishly under certain circumstances, particularly during stress or conflict.
Rather than labeling someone based on one disagreement, it is more useful to consider whether there is a persistent pattern of behavior.
Does the behavior occur repeatedly?
Does it affect several relationships?
Does it cause significant problems?
Does the person consistently disregard boundaries or refuse responsibility?
These questions provide more useful information than quickly assigning a psychological label.
How Can Narcissistic Behavior Affect Relationships?
Relationships can become emotionally exhausting when they repeatedly involve control, criticism, invalidation, or disregard for the other person's needs.
Over time, someone in such a relationship may feel that:
Their feelings are not heard.
They constantly need to please the other person.
They are afraid to express disagreement.
They frequently feel guilty.
They begin questioning their own judgment.
Setting boundaries becomes difficult.
Conflict leaves them emotionally exhausted.
Narcissism and Psychological Manipulation
Some unhealthy relationships may involve psychological manipulation, including shifting responsibility, repeatedly dismissing another person's feelings, or using guilt as a method of control.
However, manipulation is not exclusive to Narcissistic Personality Disorder.
A person should not automatically be diagnosed as narcissistic simply because they have behaved manipulatively.
It is often more useful to evaluate the behavior and its impact on your wellbeing rather than focusing entirely on finding a diagnostic label for the other person.
What Is Gaslighting?
Gaslighting generally describes a pattern of manipulation that causes someone to increasingly question their perception, memory, or understanding of events.
This may involve repeatedly denying events or consistently reframing situations in ways that make the other person doubt themselves.
However, two people remembering an argument differently does not automatically mean gaslighting is occurring. The term should be used carefully and in context.
How Do You Deal With Narcissistic Behavior?
The goal is usually not to force another person to change their personality. Instead, focus on protecting your psychological wellbeing and responding to unhealthy behaviors more effectively.
Set Clear Boundaries
Identify which behaviors you are willing to accept and which you are not.
For example:
“We can discuss this problem, but I will not continue the conversation if it becomes insulting.”
Healthy boundaries should be clear and realistic.
Avoid Endless Arguments
Some disagreements become repetitive cycles of defending, explaining, and arguing without reaching a meaningful outcome.
When communication becomes unproductive, ending the conversation temporarily may be healthier than continuing an escalating argument.
Separate Your Self-Worth From Their Opinion
Repeated criticism or devaluation can gradually affect self-esteem.
Try to distinguish between another person's opinion and a realistic assessment of your own value, abilities, and behavior.
Pay Attention to Persistent Guilt
If you find yourself constantly apologizing without understanding what you did wrong, it may be helpful to examine the relationship pattern more carefully.
Maintain a Support Network
Isolation can make difficult relationships more emotionally exhausting.
Maintaining healthy connections with trusted friends, family members, or professionals can provide perspective and emotional support.
Can a Narcissistic Person Change?
Psychological change is possible, but it depends on several factors, including the person's awareness of their behavior, willingness to accept responsibility, and genuine participation in therapy when appropriate.
A partner or family member cannot force another person to change.
Instead of focusing only on:
“How can I make this person change?”
it may also be helpful to ask:
“How can I protect my mental health and respond to this relationship in a healthier way?”
Can Narcissistic Relationships Cause Anxiety?
Relationships involving persistent criticism, instability, or conflict can negatively affect psychological wellbeing.
Some people may experience anxiety, overthinking, self-doubt, or reduced self-esteem.
However, anxiety can have many different causes, so narcissistic behavior should not automatically be assumed to be the only explanation.
Conflict occurs in all relationships. Disagreement alone does not mean that a relationship is psychologically harmful.
Warning signs become more concerning when there is a repeated pattern of:
Humiliation or devaluation.
Excessive control.
Threats or intimidation.
Isolation from friends or family.
Persistent psychological pressure.
Repeated boundary violations.
Blaming one person for every problem.
Psychological or physical violence.
When threats or violence are present, personal safety should take priority and appropriate support should be sought.
When Should You Seek Psychological Support?
Professional psychological support may be helpful when a relationship repeatedly affects your self-esteem, emotional wellbeing, or ability to make decisions and establish boundaries.
Psychological counseling may help you:
Understand relationship patterns.
Develop healthier boundaries.
Manage anxiety and self-blame.
Strengthen self-esteem.
Improve communication skills.
Make more informed decisions about the relationship.
Therapy is not about diagnosing someone who is not present in the session. It focuses on helping the person seeking support understand their own experiences, needs, boundaries, and options.
The World Health Organization provides additional information about mental health and psychological wellbeing.
Psychological and Relationship Support in Jordan
If you are experiencing an emotionally difficult relationship or struggling with narcissistic behaviors, marital conflict, or family difficulties, psychological support may help you better understand relationship patterns and develop healthier communication and boundaries.
Psychologist Suha Abu Ghoush provides psychological counseling and support for individuals, couples, and families in Jordan according to each person's circumstances and needs.
Narcissism is not simply confidence or occasional selfishness, and having narcissistic traits does not automatically mean someone has Narcissistic Personality Disorder.
What matters is understanding persistent patterns of behavior and how those patterns affect relationships and psychological wellbeing.
If a relationship repeatedly leaves you feeling guilty, devalued, anxious, or unable to express yourself, understanding the relationship pattern, establishing healthy boundaries, and seeking professional support when needed may help protect your mental health.
Disclaimer: This article is intended for psychological education and awareness only. It should not be used to diagnose Narcissistic Personality Disorder or any other mental health condition. Diagnosis requires direct assessment by an appropriately qualified professional.k

What is the Difference Between a Psychologist and a Psychiatrist? And When Should I See a Psychologist?
Many people go through problems, crises, and sometimes mental illnesses, and they get confused when thinking about seeking psychological treatment. Should they go to a psychiatrist or a psychologist? Both are trained in dealing with the mind and providing psychological care to patients, but each differs in the approach to treatment and the types of psychological problems they specialize in treating
Read MoreRead less
Here we will explain the main similarities and differences between a psychiatrist and a psychologist and answer this question.
First: The Main Differences Between a Psychiatrist and a Psychologist
1. Type of Education
The nature of education differs between a psychiatrist and a psychologist, but both require obtaining a masters degree.
Psychiatrists studied medicine for 7 years then specialized in psychiatry and received training for at least four years in hospitals and rehabilitation centers on diagnosis and approved therapeutic methods.
As for psychologists, they studied in the Faculty of Education or the Faculty of Arts in the Department of Psychology for 4 years, then received practical training in psychiatric hospitals for at least one year to obtain a professional license.
2. Psychological Problems Each Specializes In Treating
Psychiatrists specialize in critical mental conditions and mental illnesses such as schizophrenia, depression, obsessive-compulsive disorder, attention deficit disorder, and other mental illnesses that require treatment.
Whereas psychologists specialize in moderate or mild cases such as behavioral modification, sleep disorders, tension in emotional relationships, and other behavioral problems.
3. Prescribing Medication
Prescribing medication is the responsibility of psychiatrists alone because they work on both the psychological and biological levels at the same time, understanding the bodys nature and genetic history. They studied anatomy and the bodys response to medications in medical school in addition to their knowledge of the side effects of drugs.
Whereas psychologists are not allowed to prescribe or administer medication because they do not have sufficient knowledge of its biological effects and side effects.
4. Diagnosis and Treatment Methods
Psychiatrists provide comprehensive care for the patient as they focus on family and social support for the patient and their upbringing since childhood.
They may also request some types of tests and psychological measures to help with diagnosis. In cases where the patient suffers from an organic problem causing the psychological problem, the psychiatrist may resort to drug intervention alongside psychological and behavioral therapy.
Whereas psychologists rely on understanding the patients upbringing and its effect on their behavior. They offer some psychological tests and measures to help diagnose cases and rely on modifying the patients misconceptions and improving their mental state away from medication and medical examinations.
5. Practice
The ideal form of providing psychological service and care is that the first line is the psychiatrist, as they study the case and determine whether it is mild, moderate, or critical, then refer it to a psychologist.
If the cases are mild or moderate, they only require psychological treatment without drug intervention.
There are some critical cases where after the psychiatrist finishes the drug treatment, they may refer the cases to the psychologist to continue with psychological rehabilitation.
Second: What are the Similarities Between a Psychiatrist and a Psychologist?
After presenting the main differences between a psychiatrist and a psychologist, we will present the similarities between them:
1. Both are trained to understand the nature of the mind, thinking, and behaviors.
2. Both have the ability to provide counseling and psychological support.
3. Both improve and develop the patients thinking and behaviors.
Should I See a Psychiatrist or a Psychologist?
After presenting the main differences and similarities between a psychiatrist and a psychologist, we will answer the question most patients ask about which type of therapist to seek help from:
● You should see a psychiatrist if:
1. The condition is critical or when suffering from certain mental illnesses such as depression, schizophrenia, or obsessive-compulsive disorder, and other illnesses that require a specialist to request the necessary tests and scans and prescribe the appropriate medication.
2. The medical condition has persisted for a long time or has recurred after treatment.
3. Psychological rehabilitation alone is not effective, and medication intervention is needed.
4. You are considering harming yourself or suicide.
5. Your treating doctor recommends seeing a specialist psychiatrist.
● You will need to see a psychologist if:
1. You are experiencing anxiety, depression, psychological pressures, or other difficulties affecting mental health.
2. You feel that life is difficult and need psychological support to cope with it.
3. You need to assess your mental health if you feel it is not okay.
4. You are experiencing many marital problems and need help dealing with them.
5. Your child is experiencing behavioral and coping problems and needs behavior modification.
6. You have experienced an emotional shock or a painful loss and need support to overcome it in a healthy way.
