Psychosis: Symptoms, Causes, Early Warning Signs, Treatment, and Psychological Support

Psychosis symptoms, including hallucinations and delusions, and their impact on thinking, perception, and mental health

Psychosis: Symptoms, Causes, Early Warning Signs, Treatment, and Psychological Support

Psychosis affects how a person perceives and interprets reality. It may involve symptoms such as hallucinations, delusions, disorganized thinking, or significant behavioral changes.

Psychosis is not always a disorder by itself. It describes a group of symptoms that may occur in different mental health conditions, medical conditions, or other circumstances. Experiencing psychosis also does not automatically mean that someone has schizophrenia.

What Is Psychosis?

Psychosis may involve difficulty distinguishing between external reality and certain thoughts, beliefs, or perceptual experiences that feel completely real to the person experiencing them.

According to the National Institute of Mental Health (NIMH), psychosis can involve hallucinations, delusions, and disturbances in thinking and communication.

The symptoms, severity, duration, and underlying causes can differ considerably between individuals, making professional assessment important.

What Are the Symptoms of Psychosis?

Hallucinations

Hallucinations involve hearing, seeing, feeling, or otherwise experiencing something without an external source.

Hearing voices is one well-known example, although hallucinations can involve different senses.

Delusions

Delusions are strongly held beliefs that are inconsistent with reality.

For example, a person may believe they are being watched, followed, or targeted despite a lack of evidence supporting the belief.

Disorganized Thinking and Speech

A person experiencing psychosis may have difficulty organizing thoughts or communicating them clearly.

Their speech may become difficult for other people to follow.

Behavioral Changes

Significant changes may occur in behavior, daily routines, relationships, self-care, work, or education.

What Are the Early Warning Signs of Psychosis?

Before more obvious symptoms develop, some people may experience gradual changes such as:

  • Unusual social withdrawal.

  • Significant decline in work or academic performance.

  • Major changes in sleeping patterns.

  • Increasing difficulty concentrating.

  • Noticeable changes in behavior or communication.

  • Increasing suspiciousness or unexplained fear.

  • Difficulty distinguishing certain thoughts from reality.

These signs alone do not prove that someone is experiencing psychosis. Similar changes can occur for many different psychological or medical reasons.

What Causes Psychosis?

There is no single cause of psychosis.

Psychotic symptoms can occur in different circumstances and may be associated with psychiatric disorders, medical conditions, medications, substance use, or other factors.

Determining the underlying cause therefore requires appropriate professional assessment, which may include both psychological and medical evaluation.

What Is the Difference Between Psychosis and Schizophrenia?

Psychosis and schizophrenia are often confused, but they are not the same.

Psychosis describes a group of symptoms affecting a person's perception or interpretation of reality.

Schizophrenia is a specific mental health disorder that can include psychotic symptoms along with other symptoms.

In other words, psychosis may occur in schizophrenia, but experiencing psychosis does not automatically mean someone has schizophrenia.

Read more about schizophrenia, its symptoms, causes, and treatment.

Is Severe Anxiety the Same as Psychosis?

No.

Anxiety can cause intense fear, physical symptoms, persistent worry, and overthinking, but anxiety and psychosis are different experiences.

Learn more about anxiety symptoms and how to manage them.

Hallucinations, delusions, or significant changes in a person's perception of reality should be professionally assessed rather than self-diagnosed.

How Is Psychosis Diagnosed?

There is no simple online test that can reliably diagnose psychosis.

Professional assessment may consider:

  • The type of symptoms.

  • When symptoms began.

  • Their duration and severity.

  • Medical and psychological history.

  • Medication or substance use.

  • The effect on everyday functioning.

  • Possible medical conditions that could produce similar symptoms.

Additional medical investigations may sometimes be necessary.

Can Psychosis Be Treated?

Treatment depends on the cause, severity of symptoms, and individual circumstances.

A treatment plan may include:

  • Medication when clinically indicated and medically prescribed.

  • Psychiatric and medical follow-up.

  • Appropriate psychological and psychosocial interventions.

  • Family support.

  • Rehabilitation and support with everyday functioning.

  • Treatment of an underlying medical or substance-related cause when relevant.

Early and appropriate care can be particularly important when someone experiences psychotic symptoms for the first time.

Why Is Early Intervention Important?

When symptoms of psychosis first appear, seeking professional assessment early can help identify possible causes and determine appropriate treatment.

Waiting for severe symptoms to disappear on their own may delay necessary care, particularly when the person's safety, relationships, work, education, or ability to care for themselves is being affected.

How Can Families Support Someone Experiencing Psychosis?

Psychosis can be confusing and frightening for both the individual and their family.

Family members can help by:

  • Communicating calmly and respectfully.

  • Listening without ridicule or humiliation.

  • Avoiding aggressive confrontations about the person's beliefs.

  • Encouraging professional assessment.

  • Supporting the agreed treatment plan.

  • Paying attention to significant changes in behavior or safety.

Families may also benefit from professional guidance to better understand the condition and learn healthier ways to provide support.

When Is Psychosis an Emergency?

Urgent medical help should be sought when symptoms are severe, particularly when:

  • There is an immediate risk of harm to the person or someone else.

  • The person cannot meet basic needs or care for themselves.

  • Dangerous thoughts or behaviors occur.

  • Disconnection from reality becomes severe.

  • There is a sudden and significant change in mental state or behavior.

In these situations, obtaining appropriate medical care should take priority over trying to diagnose the condition at home.

What Is the Role of Psychological Support?

Psychological support may form part of a comprehensive treatment plan, but it does not replace psychiatric or medical assessment and medication when these are clinically required.

Depending on the person's condition, psychological support may help with coping skills, stress management, communication, and gradually returning to everyday activities.

It may also help family members better understand the situation and communicate more effectively.

Final Thoughts

Psychosis is not a single diagnosis, and it does not automatically mean that someone has schizophrenia. It describes symptoms that can affect perception, thinking, and behavior and may occur for different reasons.

Hallucinations, delusions, and significant changes in thinking or behavior require professional assessment, particularly when they appear suddenly or begin affecting everyday functioning or safety.

Early assessment, appropriate treatment, psychological support, and family involvement can all play important roles in care.

What is the Difference Between a Psychologist and a Psychiatrist? And When Should I See a Psychologist?

Many people go through problems, crises, and sometimes mental illnesses, and they get confused when thinking about seeking psychological treatment. Should they go to a psychiatrist or a psychologist? Both are trained in dealing with the mind and providing psychological care to patients, but each differs in the approach to treatment and the types of psychological problems they specialize in treating

Here we will explain the main similarities and differences between a psychiatrist and a psychologist and answer this question. First: The Main Differences Between a Psychiatrist and a Psychologist 1. Type of Education The nature of education differs between a psychiatrist and a psychologist, but both require obtaining a masters degree. Psychiatrists studied medicine for 7 years then specialized in psychiatry and received training for at least four years in hospitals and rehabilitation centers on diagnosis and approved therapeutic methods. As for psychologists, they studied in the Faculty of Education or the Faculty of Arts in the Department of Psychology for 4 years, then received practical training in psychiatric hospitals for at least one year to obtain a professional license. 2. Psychological Problems Each Specializes In Treating Psychiatrists specialize in critical mental conditions and mental illnesses such as schizophrenia, depression, obsessive-compulsive disorder, attention deficit disorder, and other mental illnesses that require treatment. Whereas psychologists specialize in moderate or mild cases such as behavioral modification, sleep disorders, tension in emotional relationships, and other behavioral problems. 3. Prescribing Medication Prescribing medication is the responsibility of psychiatrists alone because they work on both the psychological and biological levels at the same time, understanding the bodys nature and genetic history. They studied anatomy and the bodys response to medications in medical school in addition to their knowledge of the side effects of drugs. Whereas psychologists are not allowed to prescribe or administer medication because they do not have sufficient knowledge of its biological effects and side effects. 4. Diagnosis and Treatment Methods Psychiatrists provide comprehensive care for the patient as they focus on family and social support for the patient and their upbringing since childhood. They may also request some types of tests and psychological measures to help with diagnosis. In cases where the patient suffers from an organic problem causing the psychological problem, the psychiatrist may resort to drug intervention alongside psychological and behavioral therapy. Whereas psychologists rely on understanding the patients upbringing and its effect on their behavior. They offer some psychological tests and measures to help diagnose cases and rely on modifying the patients misconceptions and improving their mental state away from medication and medical examinations. 5. Practice The ideal form of providing psychological service and care is that the first line is the psychiatrist, as they study the case and determine whether it is mild, moderate, or critical, then refer it to a psychologist. If the cases are mild or moderate, they only require psychological treatment without drug intervention. There are some critical cases where after the psychiatrist finishes the drug treatment, they may refer the cases to the psychologist to continue with psychological rehabilitation. Second: What are the Similarities Between a Psychiatrist and a Psychologist? After presenting the main differences between a psychiatrist and a psychologist, we will present the similarities between them: 1. Both are trained to understand the nature of the mind, thinking, and behaviors. 2. Both have the ability to provide counseling and psychological support. 3. Both improve and develop the patients thinking and behaviors. Should I See a Psychiatrist or a Psychologist? After presenting the main differences and similarities between a psychiatrist and a psychologist, we will answer the question most patients ask about which type of therapist to seek help from: ● You should see a psychiatrist if: 1. The condition is critical or when suffering from certain mental illnesses such as depression, schizophrenia, or obsessive-compulsive disorder, and other illnesses that require a specialist to request the necessary tests and scans and prescribe the appropriate medication. 2. The medical condition has persisted for a long time or has recurred after treatment. 3. Psychological rehabilitation alone is not effective, and medication intervention is needed. 4. You are considering harming yourself or suicide. 5. Your treating doctor recommends seeing a specialist psychiatrist. ● You will need to see a psychologist if: 1. You are experiencing anxiety, depression, psychological pressures, or other difficulties affecting mental health. 2. You feel that life is difficult and need psychological support to cope with it. 3. You need to assess your mental health if you feel it is not okay. 4. You are experiencing many marital problems and need help dealing with them. 5. Your child is experiencing behavioral and coping problems and needs behavior modification. 6. You have experienced an emotional shock or a painful loss and need support to overcome it in a healthy way.
